Deveron Valley Cottages

Picturesquely located between mountains and the sea, Deveron Valley Cottages provide comfortable, quality self catering accommodation for families and their dogs in beautiful Aberdeenshire. For beach lovers, especially those who enjoy watersports, the cottages are in a prime location within 20 minutes’ drive of the Moray Firth, handy for the golden sands and surf spots of Banff and Sandend.

The five properties – three cottages created from former farm buildings and two log cabins – are all close to the pretty River Deveron. They have beautiful views as well as cosy interiors and are all fully furnished and equipped, one for two people and the other for four, plus a baby in one case. New owners Alyson and Jason Cairns have taken care to provide everything needed for a relaxing break and are keen to share their love for this amazing area.

Alyson says: “It’s very peaceful here and the wildlife is amazing! We get deer, pine martens, owls, foxes, badgers … but thankfully no midges! On the coast we get dolphins.

“Aberdeen and Inverness are well within driving distance and the highlands are only half an hour away.”

The area is famous for both castle and whisky trails, golf courses, ancient stone circles and country sports. Drivers can enjoy them all from the newly popularised road route, the North East 250.

The Auld Kirk B+B

Guests could find themselves in exceptionally good company when they stay at the Auld Kirk Bed & Breakfast in Ballater. It’s in the heart of Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms, where the Queen spends her Balmoral breaks every summer. In season, ‘Royal spotting’ is as much of a sport as golf and trout fishing round and about.

The Auld Kirk bed & breakfast with The Coffee Lounge as a complementary business, together offering AA 4 Star Gold accommodation. The property, a converted Victorian church, has seven guest bedrooms, a mixture of double, twin and family rooms, all with en suite showers and one with a bath.

Complimentary refreshments and toiletries are provided but one of the highlights is the delicious breakfasts available from The Coffee Lounge, which invariably attract top marks from guest reviewers. Tuesday to Saturday The Coffee Lounge serves a delightful array of sweet and savoury pastries, cakes, rolls, soups, afternoon teas and other treats, all freshly made on the premises. The premises are also licensed.

Packed lunches can be provided, but for evening meals, Ballater caters, having eateries fit for the Queen, Prince Charles, Kate & Wills …

Owners Kevin and Helen Smith attract many walkers, sightseers and people heading to the Glenshee and Lecht ski centres.

“We’ve had wonderful reviews on Booking.com and TripAdvisor,” says Kevin.
