Fife is region of remarkable variety, all contained within 1,325 square kms on the east coast of Scotland. The ‘Kingdom of Fife’ is famous for its colourful fishing villages, glorious beaches and coastline, and St Andrews – the home of golf. There’s much more to enjoy though. With its rich culture, history and heritage, outdoor activities, leisure pursuits, delicious local food and welcoming accommodation, you’ll want to come back to Fife again and again.
Madeira in Fife
Visitors enjoy a touch of the Mediterranean when they book holiday cottages at Madeira in Fife, part of a private estate about 10 minutes’ walk from the eateries and art galleries of the coastal village of Pittenweem on the East Neuk.
Madeira in Fife is an idyllic 10 acre retreat so sheltered it generates its own microclimate, which previous seafaring visitors found reminiscent of the Mediterranean island from which it takes its name. Figs, kiwis and walnuts thrive in the Victorian walled garden forming part of this tranquil spot and there can be few places as relaxing or beautiful to spend a holiday.
There are five freshly refurbished holiday homes to rent, all furnished and equipped to high modern standards. Five are one-bedroomed cottages in a terrace. Each has a super king sized bed which can be made twin on request, plus three of the cottages have a double sofabed in the living room. They have a shower or bathroom, a kitchen, seating for four plus a shared patio and garden.
The sixth holiday property is the Gardener’s Cottage, set slightly aside in front of a large lawn and a passing stream. There are three bedrooms, two with super king sized or twin beds, the other with a double bed with a bunk bed above. A double sofabed means up to nine people can be accommodated.
Ingenious design and an array of living aids at The Rings self-catering accommodation enables anyone to enjoy a Scottish getaway in the glorious countryside of Fife. Only 20 minutes’ drive from St Andrews and less than an hour from Edinburgh, the house is super-flexible and equipped for people with all manner of disabilities, including the most severe. Ensuring guests, their families and carers can all enjoy a high quality break.
This amazing, purpose-designed property sits in picturesque, peaceful farmland near the pleasant town of Cupar. Amenities include eight bedrooms with en suite wetrooms, two studio apartments and two lounge/kitchen/dining areas separated by a moveable wall. Specialist equipment is available as desired, including hospital-style beds and bath hoists. Two of the four kitchens suit independent wheelchair users.
The Rings can be configured in 23 different ways including rented as a whole, split into two or have parts portioned off. Owner Moira Henderson arrived at the design after giving 10 years’ thought to what should be provided. Her efforts earned her an MBE for accessible tourism.
“I am passionate about it,” says Moira. “I know how important it is for people to get quality time away with their loved ones.”
“Fife overall is a very accessible place – we even have beach wheelchairs – and it really is a wonderful area for a holiday.”
