Sew Far Sew Good is the failsafe company to go to when you need curtains made to measure or garments altering to fit, but this versatile business in the heart of Hinckley also delights in unusual projects with needle, thread and sewing machine.
Owner Caroline Cater had a long career teaching textile crafts before working alongside her predecessor to keep her skills as sharp as her needles. Now she offers a bespoke service making one-off items from Edwardian costumes to wedding gowns.
Smaller jobs undertaken recently include attaching military badges to uniforms, making up cushions and making clothes for a ‘memory bear’ from the shirt of a man who passed away. Larger ones included fashioning a bridegroom’s outfit modelled on Willy Wonka, complete with handmade Liquorish Allsorts buttons.
“We carry out lots of garment alterations like shortening sleeves, turning up coats and inserting new zips,” says Caroline. “Also we work on soft furnishing; shortening/creating curtains, making Roman blinds and soft cushions for homes and caravans.
“The bespoke service we provide is for when people want something really special with a professional, high quality finish, like an evening gown. Wedding dresses are my forte, but we do all sorts of strange jobs.”
“We love the more unusual challenges that make us use our design skills.”
